Kitties! A Pileated Woodpecker has been coming here since Christmas. He LOVES the suet I buy. He and all the other woodpeckers are here daily, and Titmice, Cardinals, Nuthatches, Downey's, Red Bellied woodpeckers. No Flickers yet, though I have them. Crows come to be a pest and chase the little birds. But when Big Ben is there! He keeps right on eating the suet and doesn't bat an eyelash. The crow just stands there hoping to intimidate him. Not working. He's every bit as big as the crow and what's more..."he don't care"!
Mom and I love to hear them drill. It's such a slow pecking drill...not the staccato we are used to with regular woodpeckers. Very slow and quite loud.
We had woodpecker apartment houses out there in our woods close to the house. Some dead trees. Drilled to bits, and holes everywhere. Woodpeckers coming and going all the time. Mom said she always sat on the deck and just watched everyone. The worst was when she was on mids , trying to sleep from 0835 to 1520...and they drilled on her facia. AND the cedar shakes. ON her bedroom window sill outside and her bedroom wall outside also...the cedar shakes were ruined. So was her sleep.
The cedar shakes are still there- but covered over with siding. Sleeping was a nightmare till that was installed.

That is the stained glass of Admiral you see in the window. Anna made all three cats for mom. And this is taken through screen and glass. Big Ben Bolt was NOT going to stay if Mom opened the door for a better pic.

I love woodpeckers, they are so fascinating.
Oh my goodness, how thrilling is that! Mom says she doesn't think we have those here, not that we've seen any of the ones we do have.
We belong to several FB groups full of people who have fancy cameras with telephoto lenses, and they get fabulous photos of all kinds of birds.
I cannot tell one from another, other than I know a cardinal from a bluejay from a crow, and that's all!
I would like to see owls, however.
such a handsome woodpecker. I don't get much bird TV where we live now. We cannot feed the birds because we live on a delta waterway that is lined with rocks. Guess who lives in those rocks??? Yep! Rats!!! Totally a bummer!!

We have a couple of those guys here. Once they made a nest in one of our dead palm trees.
Sometimes we see those way up here in our back woods area. They sometimes come to our suet and peanuts. Once we had red headed woodpeckers. We get all the others as well, including the flickers.They seem to like the ground better then the feeders. We had holes in our siding too; (thanks to the red belled dudes...they like to drill and call for a mate or some other territorial issues)...until we, too installed siding!

That is a great photo. We have green and spotted woodpeckers here, but they stick to drilling in the trees in our wood when they are not eating the fat balls.
They are such magnificent birds.....we REALLY love seeing (and hearing) them in our yard and at our feeders too!!

Fantastic Katie. What a wonderful photograph. We have them here too, however this winter they have not gotten on the suet for whatever reason. Thank your mom for taking such a great picture to share especially for the folks that have never seen one close up. It looks like you had Sunshine down there, we have so much frozen snow here it's pathetic. Even a tux kitty like you would go out in the snow and disappear.
What a fantastic visitor! It's rare that the biped sees them here, let alone gets a pic, though they ARE around, she can hear various woodpeckers on walks in the warmer weather. He makes for great kitty TV, Katie!

A real live woodpecker! What fun. Mom would likely be afraid of it if it came to our house. She is always afraid when nature comes too close to us. ....I know. Right...?

Not the Ficker but Flicker... they too are nice and colorful birds.

Cool! Don't think we've ever seen one here.
That sure is one colorful visitor! Ever since dad got that seed wreath that's in our Christmas post (which disappeared quite rapidly, I must say) he and mom have kept a seed bell and several suet blocks hanging out in the tree on our side yard. We regularly have a few of these, (dad just calls 'em redheaded) and have even had a huge one or two! Dad also says he's never seen such, umm, "tubby" blue jays and cardinals in his life.
I'll bet that hard-as-steel beak of Bolt's intimidates the crow a lot more than the crow intimidates Bolt. When I had my house, woodpeckers would drill on the aluminum chimney...
We see those birds, but only once in a while in the Summer.
They are quite big and a bit loud. Pretty cool :)

Mom bean says very cool Katie! We have something like that but they are called Downy woodpeckers here and don't have quite as much red heads.
What an amazing and beautiful bird! And to have woodpeckers throughout your neighborhood’s trees! Magical. Mama loves birds and we have merles and magpies who are very cheeky!
Lately all We have been seeing is Crows! We would love to see a Woodpecker - all close up and purrsonal (mol).
