Mom Here

Kitties and Woofies and pawrents.  I just visited Tales From the Foster Kittens and they had a fantastic blog posted among all the others great blogs.

Here is the eye opening blog she wrote about a touchy subject with me, since there are so many cat haters and detractors out there.  This blog showcased a good example of that misinformation on an NBC show.  Here is my comment that I just put on her blog a few minutes ago. I am going to ask her permission to publish this and if she says all right, I will.  It's a topic near to my heart.  Please read the link I have included above this sentence "an NBC show".  Then you will see my comment on her blog below.

"I hate shows on cats and dogs or just cats. They are NEVER going to get it right. They just repeat the useless hogwash that started however long ago, and never bother to try to sort our what is wrong. MY cats have always loved me because...SURPRISE! If you love them, they love you back! And show it!! That's what Katie's blog is all about. Her love of me. That I love her too is a given and obvious. But it's a relationship that we BOTH have worked on and contributed to".

I could have written an essay on the topic in my answer but I wanted to be courteous and not take up a lot of space. I wonder if you all too have noticed the seeming never ending prejudice against cats. They are NOT dogs and don't have dog personalities. Seems most people insist that cats must act like dogs or they say cats are just deceitful and not worthy of loving or caring about. Human attributes for an animal! How smart is that? Attributing human thought patterns and behaviors to an animal. Yup. That's smart. Expecting two differing species to act alike. Smart squared, huh? It won't do any good for me to keep ranting. See ya laters. I'm gonna cuddle Katie. She will appreciate it.

I will add here before I close that all Katie's blogs are meant to show just how sweet AND loving a cat can be. All of her stories are true, and when she says she loves me, she does. This is because I love her also. If the haters out there would treat their cat in a manner consistent with the personality cats are born with, there would be happier cats and people families.

  1. That is all well said. People just don't understand cats and the reason is they don't take the time to get to know cats and give them a fair assessment. Dogs just love everyone without any effort what so ever but a cat takes a little more effort and the effort is so rewarding when you earn the trust of the cat. I have done it so many times with these feral cats. My Momma kitty, it had taken probably four years for her to get to trust me. So cats are just going to get a bad rap.

  2. Very well said Katie's mom! So often when we see kitties on show we end up upset because of how the kitty is portrayed or treated. They aren't necessarily treated meanly but they are disrespected for how kitties truly are. People just don't understand the love of a cat and because of that they are missing out on what we know is the bestest love ever!

  3. We concur and just don't understand why cats are short changed. If anyone who did not understand a cat and suddenly found themselves in the company of a cat I think their tunes would soon change and they would understand how loyal, devoted, and loving cats are. Just as dogs are but different.

  4. Every time we see stories like that on the TV the word idiot comes to mind!

  6. Amen. I do believe that all relationships are built on honesty and trust. I also believe that for a relationship to be successful it takes constant work on both sides.
However, animals are more genuine than humans. They will not deceive you or mislead you. Ever. I respect that, and it makes me love them all the more.

  7. Good job Katie's mom. You are so right on with what you have said. If you love them, they will love you back. Even Marq can attest to that with her ferals. Over time they have come to trust her and love her and, of course she loves them. That's what we love about your blog - it's so easy to see that you and Katie love each other very much.

  9. Oh yes! Everything you say here is true. Husband and I have 2 kitties to whom we are devoted, and they adore us in return. They are so affectionate and wonderful. Our kitty Otis went over the RainbowcBridge In February, and our kitty Tortie in May. Bereft is the only word to describe our feeling. No, cats are not dogs, and should not be treated as such. Totally different personalities, but they surely know how to love just as much!

  10. Ain’t it the truth. I’m not a loving cat but I like kisses and am loving in my own way to Pop. I don’t bother reading that other trash.

BTW, you can get rid of all that white around the text by going into Blogger and highlighting it and pressing the “T” on the tool bar. Just saying.

  11. The mom saw most of that show and thought it was hogwash. She tuned it out...because they got so much wrong when it comes to cats. When will people get it that cats will never be like dogs...and that's okay! We're better than them!! ;)

  12. Anyone who doesn't think cats can love people should see Gracie making biskits on my neck and purring while she is on my chest and I am on the couch!

  13. There are haters out there about almost anything. And some few hate cats (irrationally, of course). WE think that is THEIR problem, not ours.

"THEY" probably hate a LOT of things, which says more about them than the things they hate.

  14. You could probably tell from my own comment on Connie's blog just how frustrated my human and I are too! What do we all need to do to fight all this misinformation? I'm working as hard as I can!

  15. I read that post, too. Those who say "cats do not care about us" clearly do not care about their cats. Like you mentioned, it's a relationship we have worked on. If they treat cats or any other animals poorly, they never get to have loving relationship.

  16. It's simple. Some people are just f*@king idiots! Dad's had me for almost 23 years, and he's had my ilk around him for as long as he can remember. Hell, his mom had one hang on for 25 years, if you can believe that. Dogs have their own... special-ness, and that's fine. We both have our good points and bad. Again, people can be idiots...

  18. I agree with everything you wrote. It is that simple, love them and they love you. Cats just have a different way of showing it than dogs. http://15andmeowing.com

  20. We just popped over to read Connie's post and are completely ant totally appalled.

    Ignorance and insensitivity runs rampant.
NBC should be ashamed of themselves and Martha Stewart (who probably doesn't even scoop her own litter boxes) should never be allowed to have any pets ever again.

  21. We could not agree with you more. Mumsy is happy she did not watch any of that misinformation and mess! Those who have cats and say such things don't love their cars, if they did the cats would love them back. How can or why would anyone ever need or want to compare them to a dog? We have always had cats and dogs living together and have never had a problem with them...we loved them all and they all loved us! Hugs and nose kisses sweet Katie for you and your sweet Mom. Thanks for visiting Pooh's blog...we knew it was you.

  25. Ok I am not a cat person but that doesn't mean I hate cats and I have no doubt that cats can be and usually are wonderful loving pets and I don't get why some people are so negative about cats if you are not a cat person don't own a cat but don't go around harming them either

    ReplyDelete
  26. We will go over and read the post although we can already guess the level of stupidity put out by NBC. Some times , if people could actually individually USE the brains they were given and and come to obvious conclusions in the process instead of just regurgitating hogwash...the world would be a better place for cats and everyone!

  27. Carole and Katie, you could not be writing about a subject closer to my ape's heart than the mess and damage these behaviourcentric, reductive media programmes cause.

Right now we have Horizon on BBC, showing a 3 parter about cats. It will be just like the last one, behaviour graduates with clipboards, stopwatches and tickboxes, spouting endless guff about "evidenced based science" when the only evidence present is that they know sweet nothing about the nature of the feline.

Behaviourism is so limited and a totally lumpen tool to study us.
There's so much nasty stuff spouted by these "scientists" that is little more than urban myth straight out of tabloids, nothing is beyond their remit to spread prejudice and ignorance about. Me and the apes, can't watch these programmes anymore.

The worst thing is that the flatus these programmes emit is taken as gospel by so many (and that includes some vets too)

If they want to study us, then Ethology is the real deal, because it is more interested in what we say and do to each other, amongst ourselves than what we have to say to humans.

  28. I come to this very late but... this galls me also. I endlessly have to set people straight about how cats have a very different social context they work within compared with dogs. If you take the time to learn about cats and connect with them in that special way they are very caring, loving and endearing. Stereotypes reflect surface observance if they have any hint of reality in them and never get to he reality and depth that makes up living beings of two legs or four.
Speaking of generalizations, most studies show dog people as more gregarious and outgoing than cat owners. Less intelligent also.
