Uh-Oh Friday

Kitties, mom waited too long to get my nails cut (No, she can't do it herself because I refuse to allow it).  So I did some pretty bad clawing on the carpet when mom isn't looking.  Mom said it's a good thing that otherwise I am purrfection purrsonified because this could be a deal breaker, this destructive clawing.  As I said before there are MANY MANY MANY MANY MANY appropriate scratching surfaces of all types both horizontal and vertical  provided all over the house and there is no good excuse for this.  All tricks and treats and methods have been used to curb me to NO avail.

SO, as I was saying, mom took me in to have my nails cut.  She just hates spending $20.00 to have them done.  But I think she has come to the conclusion that $20.00 if it lessens the severity of my clawing is worth it and she'll go every 3 to 4 weeks from now on.  So she inquired about Soft Paws. They had to throw out the ones they had because the glue was out of date (too old..they kept them too long with no sales) so if mom buys them on-line, they'll "install" them.  The Tech said he hated putting them on  the cats and that the cats hated the process equally.  That makes mom re-think having them because she doesn't want me afraid of going to the V-E-T until I "have" to be afraid on down the road for whatever happens as I age.  I would probably be afraid if there is a struggle to put them on and if most cat's hate the ordeal.  Then, it would be like trying to take the Admiral to the V-E-T where she made it almost impossible.  Mom said she's trying to put THAT off as long as possible..me being afraid of the PTU.

That's the headlines of The Katie Journal this morning.  I have started firing up the tunnel and I've been to Wales, Canada and Oklahoma so far..re-charging and about to go again. XXOO

  2. I would not think having soft paws put on would be really worse than trimming except involve quite a bit more time being held still and handled, so I guess that's the issue. Katie, lay off the carpets. The humans really dislike it. For some reason not all humans want their house to become shredded as to carpets and furniture. Go figure.

  9. you are purrfection!! mom read the package on the soft paws (we don't use them but mom recommends them) and it says you have to trim the claws and THEN put them on. so what is the point?? (no pun intended)

  13. We love the red flower on your avatar!

You should let your mommy massage your toesies, Katie. I started using just one finger on my kitties toes. They liked it and it was a good way to ease into claw trimming :)

  14. LP trims all our nails-even the foster cats' nails! We were kittens when she started so we got used to it even though Esme growls and is grumpy and tries to intimidate LP when she gets hers clipped! Since the fosters weren't used to it when they first arrived, LP gave them treats and massaged and handled their toes and eventually clipped one nail, then the next time two etc. until she could do them all. Now they are both good with it. She trims four of the cats nails every week and the fosters once a month. BUT , Levon still scratches the carpets and one of the leather chairs too... soooo...What to do?!! Darn cats! :)

  15. #1 feels very grateful that she can trim all our nails herself and we purr through it all. Of course she does cover us in kisses as she does it... The only thing is that we use our claws so little that she sometimes forgets until they're REALY sharp!

  16. I think your mom's reasoning about you starting to really hate the vet and be frightened about going there (re: the softpaws) is valid. (The lady told me so and she used to work at a vet's office).

As I kitty, I would vote for going and getting the nails trimmed. It is well worth the investment. Our claws are a big part of who we are and our "defense."

Katie, that rug scratching is very bad behavior. Stop it!

  17. Be good, Miss Katie. If your Mom learns the tricks of trimming, you may be in for treats for letting her! Win-win! Think treats, think treats, think treats....Purrs...

  18. I have worn the soft paws; it's really not that big of a deal. Didn't bother me at all. The PM took me to a petshop that does grooming and sells the claw caps to have it done, so as not to confuse this issue with going to the VET. PT

  19. Allie: OOOH KAtie! A mani/pedi! We can compare nails afterward! What color did you choose? We order online because it's cheaper. And when mother first put mine on, she did 2-3 a day to not stress me out.

That has a nice side benefit, doing it that way: my nails don't all come OFF at the same time now, either!

They last about a month, and mother only has to put one or two back on me every 3 days or so. Easy peasy!

Psst! You'd look STUNNING in red...

  20. We get our nails trimmed Katie, but it's a two-person affair...could one of your brothers hold you and your Mom snip? We are terrible squirmers and Mommy still gets 'em trimmed!

  21. You look gorgeous this morning, sweet Katie! Your flower is a lovely touch indeed. Yes, it's hard on us Moms when you kitties scratch stuff, though we know it's your instinct. :) Shredded carpets and digs in our hardwood floors are not fun at all Katie, though we love you lots. Try to be a good girl and scratch in the 'right places'... :D Have a beautiful weekend!

  22. Tsk, tsk...it is unfortunate for both of you that you have such a problem about the nail clipping. Gracie and Millie don't mind having their nails trimmed. Picking them up is the difficult part. They don't like to be picked up. I think Gracie doesn't like it because of the medication we often had to give her when she was young. I think Millie just learned to dislike being picked up from Gracie. Trimming their nails is definitely a two-person job, so I don't blame your Mom for taking you someplace to have it done.

  23. You look very pretty with your flower in your hair Katie. Neither of us had ever had our claws clipped, but when I went for my dental, the sneaky vet trimmed them. They weren't too long, just sharp. Mum was a bit annoyed because she hadn't asked for it to be done, but I was more annoyed than her. I worked really hard getting them sharp again while the Beans were on holiday and now I only have one blunt one on each foot.

Clipping is no fun, but I grind mine down on Tigger!! >^,,^<

  25. One teeny tiny bad habit... That cant possibly mar your Purrfection Purrsonified! Of course, we wont say anything about the severity of the bad habit... After all, claws are just one tiny thing, right?

Leo says: Oh boy, I hope you pop over to Ohio sometime soon! I'll let you scratch our carpet! Just.. uh.. don't do it in front of mommy.. Hey, my cat tree is carpeted, you can scratch that to high heaven! I do all the time!!

  27. We say it's twenty bucks well spent! I wish That Woman owould take us somewhere for a spa day! Instead we just get grabbed up, squished and held against our wills & then slowly but surely each paw is done. Who cares that we gets treats when we're done? NOT me! Maybe cos you get taken alla time to the nail trimmer you will get used to going.

    xoxo

  30. We have tons of scratching surfaces here too and Boodie still likes clawing the rug now and again. Luckily for her, my human purposely bought a rug that was pretty but not that expensive, expecting it to be ruined. The ironic thing is that the humans have ruined the rug way worse than Boodie with their incessant exercising!

  32. We were wondering the same thing the Lounge was - could one of your human brothers hold you while your mom clips your nails? Our daddy holds us while Mommy clips. It's quick and easy and then we get treats! Also, do you scratch at the same place in the carpet? Would you still scratch if there was a carpet scrap laid on top of it so you didn't tear up the carpet attached to the floor?

  33. Katie, we have a TON of scratching things all around our house, but I still love to scratch the carpet. Mostly the upstairs carpet. The mom tries to cut my nails but only can get me when I've been sleeping (yes, she wakes me up to cut my nails! Bad mom!).

  34. I came back to read all the good advice on this topic.

How about a cheap rug (but sturdy and large enough not to move when scratched) to put down on that spot and maybe sprinkle some catnip on it?

I like Neora Chana's suggestion of getting the softpaws put on somewhere other than the vet's office.

  35. Oh, Katie, eek! I do not think I would like those soft paws. In fact, I think a dog invented them!

I wonder if there's some mobile service that would come by your house to give you a pawdicure. My mom cuts ours but has limited success with the girls. And Caroline is like you--even though we have 900 scratching places, her favorite place is the carpet right in front of my mom's door!

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh, and I just saw Mr. Black's last comment and it reminded me. At our old place, my mom did buy a little mat to put in front of her door and that seemed to work for Caroline.

    ReplyDelete
  37. I wonder if your Mommy could maybe buy a few cheap throw rugs at Target or someplace and put them in the spots you like to claw and just let you have at 'em?? That might work if your "activities" are confined to certain areas.

I loves you sweet girl. Would you come visit ME later?

  38. Another thing that you and Princeton have in common. We can't imagine try to put soft claws on him either! Mom did just buy him another cat tree, though and he just LUVS it! xoxo

  39. Katie, the only person who can cut my nails and she uses a nail clipper is my Auntie Megan and somebody else has to hold me while she clips them (even has to go in-between paw pads, yikes!)

But, Mom Julie can't handle me alone, so I get my meownicure (funny how posts sometimes sync on the same subject :)) with her help.

    Have a good weekend!

    Tom

  41. Chic red flower! Maybe your mom should buy you red colored soft paws? Maybe if they match your bow, you will be more OK with wearing them? Good Luck!
